A few years ago, I was approached by Mike Macauley, the webmaster for Shur’tugal.com.
You see, he had this idea. He wanted to create an extensive almanac based on Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle. He did not know how he should approach Random House about the project. Since he and I had met at two Comic Cons—which bonds people like nothing else—and he knew I knew many of the Random House people, he came to me.
I get asked similar questions all of the time from people I don’t know. It is one of the side effects of running the Terry Brooks website. And since I’ve been trying to bust down the publishing door for the last four years for my own work, Mike knew he could trust me. I, in turn, just like passing on the information I’ve gained over the years.
I learned it from someone else. Therefore I must pass it on.
Mike was adamant about his project. We exchanged several emails and I gave him my advice along with links about how to pitch a non-fiction book to Random House. I told him it wouldn’t be hard. Many people in the RH offices knew the excellent job Mike does with the largest Christopher Paolini site out there, and I knew those same people would be more than happy to look at anything Mike supplied them.
Flash forward several years. The result of his endeavors is below:
The Inheritance Almanac is the culmination of what Mike wanted to do. It couldn’t have been done by a better person. Mike knows the world of Alagaesia inside and out, and he’s been the direct beneficiary of inside information for quite a while. That makes this book a must for any Paolini fan.
I doubt I had anything to do with it. Sometimes people just need to hear that they can do something. Then they do it. I think that is the case here. It’s still nice to see Mike accomplish his goal though.
Both Christopher Paolini and Mike Macauley will be at Comic Con International 2010. Be sure to watch Unbound Worlds and www.shurtugal.com for their exploits.
The Inheritance Alamanac will be published on October 26, 2010.
