This month’s story from Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine is “Swamp City Lament” by Alexandra Duncan. Set in a postapocalyptic future that may be nearer than we think, it focuses on a young girl whose life is about to change forever. In several ways it reminds me of Ray Bradbury’s classic and beloved story, “All Summer in a Day,” involving as it does a lost and almost forgotten former world, a girl caught up in events beyond her control, and–perhaps–a glimpse of better things. . . .
