Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Unbound Worlds. Whether it be science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.
Ari Marmell writes a mean fantasy novel. Action, attitude, and throwback appeal aplenty; Ari just gets it. His first epic, The Conqueror’s Shadow, introduced readers to the beautifully written anti-hero Corvis Rebaine. Clad in bone armor, Corvis means business. He’s also been giving advice here on Unbound Worlds, which could be a nice side job. Next week, Corvis returns in The Warlord’s Legacy. Here’s a little something from Del Rey Spectra editor David Pomerico regarding Ari, Corvis, and the book:
“I love these books—it’s one of the reasons why I chose to edit them in the first place. But one thing that I really liked about The Warlord’s Legacy was seeing different characters emerge and formed, just as the familiar characters from The Conqueror’s Shadow—Corvis, Seilloah, Davro—continued to grow. It was seeing Mellorin and Jassion evolve that was so exciting for me, especially as it was still a part of one of the few throw-backs to the traditional sword-and-sorcery fantasy I grew up on and that I love so much.
I also want to point out what a great job Larry Rostant did on the covers of both of Ari’s books. The Conqueror’s Shadow is great, but I find myself sitting in my cube, marveling at how great The Warlord’s Legacy turned out. It does exactly what I want in drawing readers in and giving them an idea of what the book is about. So kudos to Larry (and to our art director here, Dave Stevenson).
Ultimately, though, Ari is a fun and exciting talent—make sure to check out The Goblin Corps when it comes out this summer, too—and I think if you get a taste (like you can here), you’re going to be hooked.
