Del Rey Spectra 50 Page Fridays: Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Unbound Worlds. Whether it be science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

With the arrival of August it seems we have finally entered the “dog days” of summer. But lately here in the concrete jungle of New York the heat has been so broiling that the term “dragon days” of summer seems much more appropriate. But then, this is New York, a city rife with metal and machinery and technological gizmos. I think the “mechanical dragon days” of summer fits perfectly. And hey, it’s also a perfect segue into this week’s excerpt. I’ll bore you no longer, allow me to once again introduce beloved DRS editor Anne Groell and our book for the week, Havemercy by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett. And…action!

Havemercy remains one of my favorite novels on the Spectra list, both for its amazing characters and its abundant charms…not to mention the awesome power of its metal dragons!  With its unique and imaginative blend of epic fantasy, steampunk, humor and heroism, this debut novel claws its way into your heart and remains there.  So I am delighted now to be offering you a taste of this wonderful novel–which is also the first in a highly-addictive series.

Rook is the toughest of the airmen who fly the metal-and-magic dragons that keep the city of Thremedon safe from its invaders.  But when his particular brand of brash self-confidence nearly sets off an international incident, the city’s ruler decides that the best way to rein in his unruly airmen is to submit them all to sensitivity training.  Thom is the reluctant graduate student who is granted this impossible task, and his particular blend of studious sobriety is no quickly stretched to its limits, no match for the riotous and entitled airmen.

Meanwhile, Royston is a magician who has been banished from the city to his brother’s remote country estate after himself precipitating a second international incident.  And there, in a place he considers unpleasant populated by sheep and trees–and uncomfortably devoid of life’s finer pleasures–he meets a young tutor whose keen desire for knowledge and learning may save not only Royston, but the whole of their nation.

Told in alternating first-person narratives from four vibrant, yet very different, characters, Havemercy is a real treat–a fantasy of manners with a hard-edged, fighting beat.  “I’ve read and re-read this series,” Charlaine Harris raves.  “I think it is great.”  I hope you agree.”
