Del Rey and Random House say goodbye to Betsy Mitchell

Dear Readers,

Some of you will have heard that after 10 years as editor-in-chief of Del Rey, I am taking early retirement from Random House at the end of this year. I’ve bid a very fond farewell to my authors and their agents, turned over any unfinished projects to my fellow editors here at Del Rey/Spectra, and started (repeat: started ) to clean out my office. Now I’m taking the opportunity to say goodbye and thanks to all of you.

• To the readers I’ve met at conventions and writer’s conferences over the years: Thanks for your enthusiasm and willingness to tell us which books you’ve enjoyed (and didn’t so much enjoy). Your encouraging words and feedback make what we do here in the office seem so much more worthwhile.

• To all those who have posted reviews for our books on your blogs, Goodreads, and other review sites: Word of mouth is something we can’t buy but only hope for. You may not realize it, but you’ve affected the SF/fantasy field by talking up the authors you discovered on our list.

• To those who have nominated our books for awards and voted for so many of our authors: What can I say? We always hope to pick the absolute best, but it’s amazing when the readers agree!

• To all those who entered the Unbound Worlds writing contest or have submitted a manuscript to Del Rey for possible publication: The world needs great stories. Don’t ever give up if there is a tale you have to tell. Work on it, get feedback, fix your mistakes, polish it as many times as necessary… and I hope to see you in print!

Ad astra!
Betsy Mitchell
