The Snow Queen’s Shadow author Jim C. Hines recently struck a pose – several of them, actually – to make a point about the way women are portrayed in fantasy book covers. The results were hilarious! (sorry Jim!)
“My sense is that most of these covers are supposed to convey strong, sexy heroines, but these are not poses that suggest strength. You can’t fight from these stances. I could barely even walk.”
I love Jim’s lighthearted way of launching a discussion about covers so much ground: sexism, sexuality, gender, art and more. It is rich ground for discussion, and with well over a hundred comments on the post and counting it’s obvious that people are interested in having that discussion. At least one of the authors has chimed in as well. Go and check it out.
