Two Benefit Auctions of Note

There is a lot to learn in this business.

But if there is one thing I’ve learned in the sixteens years of working in the speculative fiction publishing world, it’s that people are generous.

We protect our own. Having been the quintessential bastards of pop culture for so long, we watch out for one another, take care of one another. It is a response to largely being outcast, I believe, particularly during our young formative years—and finding comfort with other like individuals. Science fiction and fantasy readers by and large seem to be emotionally aware too, which lends to that generosity when it is needed.

I have been the direct beneficiary of that charity and goodwill in the last year. In mid-2011, I began chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer that has a high rate of curability but which takes six months of treatment. Treatment is costly and, lacking health insurance, I quickly accrued a rather sizable debt. Researching the financial avenues I could go by, I decided to do something unique. Many of the best writers working today donated short stories to be compiled in an anthology titled Unfettered. The proceeds will alleviate that debt.

I also, sadly, discovered a great many other people are in my same position. So whenever I see an auction that helps them, I like to spread the word.

Here are two such auctions:

This auction is in support of fellow Illustrator Cyril Van Der Haegen as he deals with a rare, life-threatening illness. He has been diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura as well as Myeloma—and like many artists is uninsured.

The plan is to run an art auction over the span of San Diego Comic Con, July 11-15th, with a parallel auction on eBay ending on Saturday July 14th. The original art will be on display at Dave Seeley’s booth: 4600. The eBay auctions will begin on July 4th. Winners could pick up their winnings on Sunday July 15th, at Comicon, or have them shipped.

The following artists have pledged to donate a piece of art, and as they are completed:

Julie Bell, Boris Vallejo, Stephan Martiniere, Donato Giancola, Dan Dos Santos, Gregory Manchess, Jon Foster, Rebecca Guay, Lars Grant West, Todd Lockwood, Scott Fischer, Bruce Jensen, Sam Burley, Dave Seeley

King of Thrones by Mark Lawrence is the second installment of his fantasy trilogy that began with Prince of Thorns.

This new book is yet to be published. It will be published August 2012. The manuscript up for auction is the one used by Mark for publisher corrections before it goes to print. It has many hand written editorial notes and changes, and it comes with a letter of authenticity. A collectible of the highest note.

All proceeds go to the Children’s Hospice: South West Fund. The hospices describe themselves as being for life-limited children, which covers terminally ill children and children whose level of disabilities make it unlikely they’ll reach adulthood.

Mark was extremely generous giving up a unique aspect of his publishing history—especially the manuscript being auctioned before the actual book is published!

Bid on these two auctions if you have the ability to do so. Both are for great causes!
