50 Page Fridays: Christie Golden

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Unbound Worlds. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

Christie Golden is the award-winning author of more than thirty novels and several short stories in the fields of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. This week’s excerpt is taken from her latest fantasy adventure FABLE: EDGE OF THE WORLD. The official prequel novel to the Xbox 360 videogame, Fable:™ The Journey, this novel is a must have for fans of Fable 3 who want to be in the know on all the harrowing plot twists that occur between the games. Let’s hear what the author herself has to say:

“The FABLE universe is, without a doubt, the most light-hearted one in which I’ve been invited to work. I’d heard they were fun games, but hadn’t actually played them until I was offered a chance to do a tie-in novel. I set about researching FABLE, and was delighted with what I found. The voice acting impressed me: John Cleese…Simon Pegg…Stephen Fry…Ben Kingsley? Good heavens! And all the little bits and pieces sprinkled into a story that had its share of drama and laugh-out-loud humor. I thoroughly enjoyed FABLE III and–having chosen to play the Prince–wanted to know, as I am sure many others do–what happens next to him?

Lucky me, with the blessing of Del Rey and Lionhead, I got to decide.

Intrigued by the exotic land of Samarkand mentioned in the games, I thought that a Silk Road-type of adventure would be just the ticket. We pick up with our Prince and his loyal friends Jasper, Ben, Page–and lovely new Auroran wife Laylah–and follow them on an adventure of action and danger abroad, and intrigue at home. Oh come on. Like I’d write a sequel to FABLE III without Reaver in it. It is far too entertaining to write his dialogue!

I did my research on the actual Silk Road history, and wove the Fable history in and around it. There are some new friends along the way, old enemies, and cameos that I think readers will enjoy. It’s my hope that this will feel like an extension of the game. I most certainly had fun writing it, and I hope fans of the game have a blast reading it.

For Albion! ”
