50 Page Fridays: G. T. Almasi

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Unbound Worlds. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.

This week, our excerpt comes from BLADES OF WINTER, the first installment of an epic new series. In it, we meet Alix Nico, a trained assassin and beautiful, kickass heroine working for the American government. When she uncovers a long-hidden conspiracy, the United States, and the other superpowers of the world are in for an earth-shattering surprise that could change the balance of the world forever.

Author G. T. Almasi tells us more about his shining debut:

“The idea for Blades of Winter began with the main character, Scarlet. I imagined a tightly-wound teenage girl with a gung-ho attitude. Then I added plenty of biotic enhancements that made her into one of the USA’s best young superspies. She and her capabilities combine my love for James Bond movies with the impossible things I see from Olympic gymnasts. If teenagers can execute flying triple-flip-double-spin moves and stick the landing, I decided they can also be government hitmen. I kept adding ideas to my notes, and eventually I realized I had enough for a book.

I’d never considered writing a novel before, but I had so much material that I decided to give it a try. I grabbed my favorite elements of science fiction movies, video games, adventure stories, and cyberpunk novels and chucked them in a blender. To keep my alt-world’s international tension at a permanent boil, I brewed an alternate history where the Germans win World War Two, giving me four superpowers to play with. I also cooked up a U.S. government program to recruit and train children as covert-action agents. The final ingredient was a plot to destroy the world.

I also wanted to match the frantic pacing of today’s everything-on-demand electronic media, so I tried to give every page a gunfight, a car chase, a sarcastically funny observation, or a big plot reveal. If I found myself kind of bored writing a scene, I changed it or took it out. This helped with my motivation, too, since I was only writing the “good” parts. I like to think of this approach as The Fast American Novel.

I’m really excited that my book is finally coming out, and I can’t wait to see where things go from here! So I hope you enjoy this 50-page peek into Blades of Winter.”
