Welcome to the Tolkien Re-read!

the-hobbit-an-unexpected-journey-posterHey there, Suvudians! (Unbound Worlds-ians? Unbound Worldsans?) Are you ready for something new and exciting, though maybe not that new or exciting, but definitely nerdtastic and fun? I sure hope so because this Del Rey/Spectra newbie has just committed herself to a re-read of J.R.R. Tolkien in honor of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hitting theaters this December. (Also to quench my decade-old desire to read Tolkien’s work again, but no one cares about that.)

Now, I know what you’re thinking: When you say “a re-read of J.R.R. Tolkien” do you mean The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings or both?” My answer: Yes! And The Silmarillion, too. (No, for realsies, I love that book and nothing you say will discourage me from the endeavor.)

Each week, right here, I’ll be posting a write-up of my progress, complete with chapter summaries, my own musings, and anything else Tolkien-related that I feel like throwing in. So, if you’ve been wanting to (re)read The Hobbit before the movies come out, here’s your chance. If you just want to use my hard work as digital cliff notes, well, that’s okay, too.

Welcome to my re-read of Tolkien. By the end I’ll either love his books more or wonder how I could ever have become so obsessed with them in the first place. Should be interesting. Tune in next week for the start of Part I: The Hobbit, in which I talk about chapters 1-3 and mention Richard Armitage two too many times.

Until then, please enjoy these pictures from the first movie. And these. Also, these.
