New Release Interview: Two Ravens & One Crow by Kevin Hearne

Two Ravens and One CrowKevin Hearne is at the top of his game.

Over the last few years, he has published The Iron Druid Chronicles, a successful urban fantasy series that has been building fans with every book release. He has just been tapped by Del Rey and Lucas Books to write a Star Wars novel featuring Luke Skywalker set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. He is also one of the authors contributing to the eagerly-anticipated forthcoming fantasy anthology, Unfettered.

And most recently, he published a novella titled Two Ravens & One Crow, featuring his Iron Druid Atticus O’Sullivan!

Here is a bit more about it:

Atticus O’Sullivan is back in an all-new, action-packed, laugh-out-loud novella from the author of The Iron Druid Chronicles. Two-thousand-year-old Atticus may have outwitted and outfought everyone from Odin to Bacchus, but in this eBook original, he’s about to discover what comes around when you go around messing with gods.

Six years into the training of his beautiful apprentice, Granuaile, a large crow swoops down and transforms into none other than the Morrigan, a goddess who insists that Atticus come with her at once. He must leave his apprentice behind, along with his Irish wolfhound, Oberon—and he must also leave his sword. The Morrigan has always taken extreme pleasure in pronouncing the Druid’s mortal danger and imminent doom, so the fact that she won’t reveal the purpose of their journey makes him very nervous. Of course, any time the Celtic Chooser of the Slain drops in unannounced, it’s never good. When she does let slip that she’ll be saving his life in the near future, Atticus is left to wonder . . . will he soon be giving his legions of enemies something to crow about?

Includes a preview of Kevin Hearne’s highly anticipated new novel in The Iron Druid Chronicles, TRAPPED!

To celebrate this new novella, I decided to ask Kevin a few questions about it and his work. Here it is. Enjoy!

Shawn Speakman: For readers who have not yet read the tales of Atticus and Oberon, tell us about the Iron Druid Chronicles?

Kevin Hearne: The Iron Druid Chronicles follow the adventures of Atticus O’Sullivan, the modern name of a 2,100-year-old Druid living among us and hiding out from various pagan deities that wouldn’t mind seeing him dead with the rest of his brethren. Along with his Irish wolfhound, Oberon, and his apprentice, Granuaile, they get into quite a bit of trouble once Atticus decides to stop hiding.

SS: Where does Two Ravens & One Crow fit in the chronology of the series?

KH: It’s intended to be 4.5 of the series. It’s set six years after the events of book four, TRICKED, and six years before book five, TRAPPED.

SS: Is this a good place for new readers to jump on board with your work?

KH: It depends on how comfortable people are with reading out of order. While each book is an adventure on its own, there are also series plot lines that get developed and I confess that I don’t spend much time rehashing older developments. The best place to jump in would be book one, HOUNDED, and there are free samples of the first 50 pages available—I have links on the home page of my website.

SS: Celtic and Irish mythology has a grand tapestry to pull from. My own writing uses it as well. What did/do you read for research? The Mabinogi? Arthurian tales?

KH: I tend to focus strictly Irish mythology, the Fenian and Ulster Cycles and goodies like that. Except for the Norse bits, of course—for that I consult the Poetic and Prose Eddas.

SS: Is it a great thing to pull from that tapestry? Or do you feel jailed to it?

KH: Oh, it’s utterly fabulous! The Irish have plenty of great characters to explore, but I honestly haven’t run across many of them in my own fiction reading, aside from turbo-famous names like the Morrigan and maybe Brighid. That’s why I was (and still am) overjoyed to play around with them in my work.

SS: What are you working on now? What do you have coming out?

Book five, TRAPPED, comes out November 27, and book six, HUNTED, comes out in June of 2013. Apart from the novels, I have a short story called “The Chapel Perilous” coming out in the UNFETTERED anthology next year. I also have at least two other projects in the works right now but can’t announce them yet, and of course I hope to continue to write the Iron Druid series.
