Gifts For the Geek is on Day 18!

We have covered new fantasy books, new fantasy Blu-ray movies, new fantasy merchandise. But we haven’t covered art yet.

As a geek, I love all things geek. But for some reason, fantasy art makes me a Super Geek. I love fantasy art. If a piece of fantasy art speaks to me, I buy it. While I have limited wall space, I have two dozen different pieces of artwork—some still needing to be framed. Some are signed giclees; some are original paintings.

I’m not alone in this love for fantasy art. Other fantasy readers enjoy the marvelous imaginations of these painters as well! Most artists offer wonderful originals or reproductions of their work, perfect gifts for the geek in your life!

So here are a few of my favorites for Gifts For the Geek:

Michael Whelan
Michael Whelan has been winning Hugo Awards from time out of memory. He is responsible for artwork based on Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series, Michael Moorcock’s Elric series, Melanie Rawn’s Sunrunner series, and many, many others. He has a brand new website with store and it’s incredible! Definitely take a look and hunt for your holiday geek needs!

Todd Lockwood
Todd Lockwood is one of my favorite artists. He brings a similar prowess to Michael Whelan and has also been responsible for some of the best book cover art. He’s done the covers for R.A. Salvatore’s Drizzt series, interior artwork for Terry Brooks’ Shannara series, Steven Erikson’s Malazan series, and many, many more. Like Michael Whelan, he has a great website where people can order beautiful reproductions of every piece of artwork he’s done. Plus he happens to be one of the nicest I know (he contributed the artwork for my anthology Unfettered as well as my novel The Dark Thorn) and gives great customer service!

Chris McGrath
Chris McGrath is the artist responsible for current covers on the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher! Publisher art departments use him for various projects but he is definitely best known for his gritty, urban fantasy novel covers. Like Todd Lockwood, Chris McGrath offers reproductions of every piece of artwork he’s done on his website. I find his Harry Dresden covers beautiful—especially the new cover for Cold Days—so if you have a Jim Butcher fan in your life this might be a good gift to give!

Damn, Donato is a great artist! Just looking at his art should convince you. He is obviously classically trained, his painting echoing some of the masters during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. He has taken that talent and filtered it through fantasy, creating a wonderful and powerful new I first became aware of his art from his work on The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I loved that artwork so much I bought the original sketch that led to its creation. Donato has a strong portfolio and is responsible for many great covers. Definitely check him out!

There are so many other great artists, I can’t even list them here. Dan Dos Santos, Brom, Bob Eggleton, Larry Elmore, Keith Parkinson, John Picacio, and many, many others! Do some web searches and find more!

Do some internet browsing, check out some new artists, and maybe find something for that fantasy geek in your life!

Art is life.
