Gifts for the Geek: Day 22: George R.R. Martin’s ‘Dreamsongs’

I bet you’ve got a friend or family member who doesn’t usually enjoy “that fantasy stuff” but has really gotten into A Game of Thrones. I know a lot of them, myself. Little do they know that they’re teetering on the precipice of full geekdom, and you know what? I’d like to give them a helpful push. Maybe you would, too.

If these unsuspecting soon-to-be fantasy freaks have already read George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, then the best way that you could nudge them along into full-on fandom would be to give them George R.R. Martin’s Dreamsongs collection. This two-volume set collects some of the author’s very best short stories in a variety of genres: fantasy, science fiction and horror – perfect for “bite-sized” reading. When you’re talking about GRRM, you’re talking about high quality stuff, and reading a short story collection is the literary equivalent of being hit with a shotgun blast: something’s bound to hit the mark. (Although one hopes the experience is far more pleasurable.)

Think of giving these two books as a gift to yourself: With any luck, you’ll have another fantasy fan to chat with next Christmas.
