Gifts For the Geek: Day 30: Bookstore Gift Certificate

powells-giftcardGifts For the Geek winds down as time for the geek shopper grows scarce.

I feel it is more than appropriate to feature J.R.R. Tolkien, to capture the mood of the last few days before the holidays come to an end:

“We cannot get out. The end comes soon. We hear drums, drums in the deep. They are coming”

About ten years ago when I worked for Barnes & Noble, my friend Graham came over the loud speaker after we had closed on December 24th. Graham is one of the smartest men I know and is possessed of a dry wit and literary history few have. At that time, I had no idea he read fantasy. He read the Tolkien passage above. Us workers, who were trying to put the store back together after customers had ransacked it like goblins in the deep, hooted and laughed at the joke.

We all knew what it meant. We were trapped and it was going to be a long night getting the store ready for the opening on the 26th after customer destruction.

Bookstores are great for stories like that.

Time is also running out for the late shopper. But for the geek, don’t fear. The story above reminded me of what could be the best geek gift ever. The ultimate fall back gift is the bookstore gift certificate! All bookstores have a gift certificate in some form or another. Some are paper. Some are plastic cards. Others are an electronic print off.

No matter the means, the result is the same: a geek having the monetary power to buy new books!

I am a bibliophile, first and foremost. I love books. So do many of you. To me, I would much rather have a simple bookstore gift certificate to buy a great many books, to be enjoyed in the coming new year. Books keep me alive—through their entertainment and education.

And with a gift certificate, the geek can get exactly what they want!
