Gifts for the Geek: Day 31: ‘The Essential Reader’s Companion: Star Wars’

I flipped through The Essential Reader’s Companion: Star Wars a dozen times when I was at New York Comic Con, and I think it’s just awesome. I met author Pablo Hidalgo and artist Jeff Carlisle, too, so maybe I’m a little biased. They’re both super cool guys. Still, even If I had never gotten a chance to hang out with Pablo and Jeff, I’m pretty sure I’d be head over heels in love with this book.

This is a heavy book. It has a great heft in your hands – it feels like you’ve really got something worthwhile. It’s absolutely full of awesome Star Wars art from all periods of the saga, and text devoted to just about every single facet of all the Star Wars novels ever written (and some that aren’t even published yet!). If Star Wars is a mythology, then this could very well be its official concordance. What I like most about this book is it has something to offer every Star Wars reader: If you’ve only read a few Star Wars books, then this is a great stepping off point to exploring the expanded universe, and if you’ve read tons of them, this book will tie them all together and illuminate the entire story.

This is a great gift for the holidays, and one I’d recommend for any Star Wars fan.

Why is this book not available in Australia? Dymocks, QBD, Angus&Robertson and a number of book stores are no longer stocking Star Wars books and if they are they’re stocking insufficient numbers. Many also refuse to order them in.
