Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Unbound Worlds. Whether it is science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless.
Because April is Autism Awareness month, and because we’re celebrating the tenth anniversary of this Nebula-award winning novel, this week’s excerpt is taken from The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon. The newest edition of the paperback has a brand new cover, and an introduction written by the author explaining exactly why she was inspired to create a character with Autism. A speculative, futuristic novel set in a world where diseases and other genetic defects are corrected in infancy, The Speed of Dark centers around Lou Arrendale, an adult with Autism whose generation was the last to be born before the medical and scientific breakthroughs were introduced.
Lou is offered a new, experimental surgery that promises to “correct” his Autism, and he must decide if he wants it. He’s worried he’ll be a different person without the Autism that has defined his life and much of his personality. He fears he will no longer be himself. More than anything though, he worries that the surgery will somehow affect how he feels about a special woman in his life.
Written from Lou’s perspective, The Speed of Dark gives us a peek into the mind and feelings of someone living with Autism in a way not very many books are able to do. The Washington Post Book World wrote that the book is “Splendid and graceful . . . A lot of novels promise to change the way a reader sees the world; The Speed of Dark actually does.” And shortly after its publication, SF Site wrote that “At worst, Speed of Dark is a magnificent character study. At best, it’s the most powerful book you’ll read this year.” So this April, take a moment to get a tiny glimpse into what it must be like to have Autism by reading the excerpt below.
