New Release Interview: Blood of Dragons by Robin Hobb

hobb-bloodShawn Speakman: BLOOD OF DRAGONS is released today! Tell Unbound Worlds readers a little about it and the Rain Wild Chronicles?

Robin Hobb: Blood of Dragons is the concluding volume of the Rain Wild Chronicles. It takes place in the Rain Wilds, a location familiar to readers of The Liveship Traders trilogy. And those readers will get some substantial glimpses of familiar characters as this tale winds to a close.

Speakman: What did you hope to accomplish with this newest series? Do you think you did?

Hobb: Utter failure in that department! I started out with the idea I would write a stand alone novel set in the Realm of the Elderlings. I wanted to create a book that would invite readers to sample my world without making a huge time commitment. And here I am, wrapping it up four books later.

Speakman: What is it about dragons that stirs your creativity and interests readers?

Hobb: Large, top of the food chain predator, with intelligence and culture, and no respect for human ideas of ownership. Too much fun!

Speakman: As you said, the Rain Wild Chronicles was going to be one book but the story grew too large in the telling? Can you tell us a bit about how that happens within your craft of writing?

Hobb: The tale grew in the telling. As I recall, a fellow named Tolkien first made that observation. It’s as true now as it was then. Characters step forward and gain importance and one wants to know what becomes of them. Sub plots develop and sprawl across the page. And at the end of the story, the writer wants to wrap things up nicely, so the readers don’t feel the story just stops. So, it does, it grows in the telling.

Speakman: To Fitz. There are rumors you’d like to return to Fitz’s storyline. Any truth to these rumors or are you going to write something completely new next?

Hobb: Shame on you, Shawn. You’re supposed to be my friend.

Blood of Dragons by Robin Hobb is in fine bookstores now!
