The Arrival of Unfettered

speakman-unfetteredYesterday, I received my hardcover copies of the new fantasy anthology, Unfettered.

But first, back in February, I asked how some of the best writers in the business reacted to seeing their book the first time. You can read the article titled When Writers Meet Their Debut Books.

In that article, I talked about the oddity of meeting my debut book, The Dark Thorn, when it arrived. In short, I felt nothing. Nothing at all. I marveled at the book’s presentation but I wasn’t giddy at finally holding the child of my mind. I was no longer emotionally attached to the tale. I came to the conclusion that I am one of those rare writers who only bond with the book they are currently working on. Once that book is done, it is no longer connected to me, off on its own.

You’d think then that I would feel nothing when Unfettered arrived. After all, I’ve been finished with it for months now.

But when the massive freight truck backed toward the doors of the building I am housing the books within today, I felt my blood pressure rise in anticipation. I realized I was excited to meet Unfettered. It is the culmination of a long road that began the day I was diagnosed with cancer, and this last day is tied irrevocably to that first.

The arrival of Unfettered reminds me how alive I am and I should embrace every moment with joy.

Here are some pictures of Unfettered being delivered:

As you can see, I have a few copies of the book that need to be dealt with. In good time. I travel back to Seattle tomorrow to see 450 copies be signed by Terry Brooks, Peter Orullian, and Todd Lockwood. Then I have to ship those out first. I then return to my pseudo-warehouse where I begin shipping out copies that were ordered—in some cases—all the way back to November 2012!

Thank you to everyone who has supported this project! It means a great deal!

To be unfettered…
