Major Major Superhero Series Coming to Netflix in 2015

luke-cageWe’re getting not one, not two or three, but FOUR new live-action Marvel comic book series coming exclusively to Netflix.

Our sister site Word and Film reports:

Get ready to celebrate, comic book fans: The Walt Disney Company’s Marvel has inked an exclusive deal with video service Netflix to distribute four new live-action, original superhero series over the course of the next several years. Set to begin in 2015, the four as-yet unnamed series will each focus on a different hero from Marvel Comics’ stable: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Also on tap is “The Defenders”, a miniseries that will tie all four programs together.

I’m very excited about this. Daredevil has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters, and in my opinion, the 2003 film didn’t do Matt Murdock and friends justice. Plus, Luke Cage has been long overdue for his own film or series. Sent to prison as a young man for a crime he didn’t commit, Cage underwent an experimental procedure that left him with bullet-proof skin and super-powered muscles in exchange for an early release. He’s a cool guy, plus it would do the Marvel TV and film empire some good to have a little diversity. I don’t know as much about Jessica Jones but she sounds like a complicated and interesting character- apparently she’s an embittered sometimes superhero with superhuman strength, endurance and the ability to fly. She’s also an occasional detective and one-time news correspondent. She’s also married to Luke Cage. Daniel Rand, AKA “Power Fist’ is an expert martial artist with superhuman energy powers and the ability to heal. He’s Luke Cage’s partner.

All of these characters are tough, street-wise heroes; the kind of folks who will not hesitate to put a super-powered beatdown on common criminals and supervillains alike. Think Batman, if Bruce Wayne had grown up poor and in a rough neighborhood.

All four of Netflix’s new series will be tied together through a limited series event called “The Defenders”. I can’t wait.
