Marvel Entertainment to Publish ‘Star Wars’ Comics and Graphic Novels In 2015

starwarslogoDisney’s Lucasfilm will be publishing Star Wars comic books and graphic novels via Marvel Entertainment, according to an announcement posted today at Marvel, a subsidiary of parent company Disney, has been granted exclusive rights to create and publish Star Wars comics beginning in 2015.

Dark Horse Comics has held the license since 1991, but the franchise began with Marvel in March 1977 with the publication of Star Wars #1, which went on to sell over a million copies. Marvel went on to publish Star Wars comics for nearly a decade before Dark Horse was granted the license.

Lucasfilm franchise publishing director Carol Roeder expressed gratitude to Dark Horse for its contributions to the Star Wars universe.

“Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had,” said Roeder.  “In 2015, the cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within the Star Wars universe.”

Marvel worldwide publisher Dan Buckley is enthusiastic to begin publishing new titles.

“We here at Marvel could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels,” said Marvel worldwide publisher and president, Dan Buckley. “The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away.”

Dark Horse founder Mike Richards stated that the publisher was prepared for the move and promised new and exciting content in 2015.
