George R. R. Martin On Half a King

Half a King by Joe Abercrombie publishes July 15, 2014.

It is definitely one of the most anticipated books of the year. I see it mentioned on many fantasy blog lists in that fashion, and readers on my social media agree. They want the book. And they should. I read an early copy of it two months ago—and loved every moment. Joe is in fine form, creating a menagerie of colorful and complex characters, with enough twists and turns to keep the pages quickly turning until the reader is craving the second book.

And make no mistake. I want that sequel, Half the World. It is going to be a painful wait. That’s how I know how much I enjoyed Half a King.

When a writer of Joe’s caliber builds such a great readership, he will undoubtedly capture the attention of other writers in the field. He has done that and counts Robin Hobb, Sam Sykes, Patrick Rothfuss, and Myke Cole as readers. Pretty awesome company.

George R. R. Martin is also a fan and recently said this about Half a King:

“Joe Abercrombie does it again. HALF A KING is another page-turner from Britain’s hottest young fantasist, a fast-paced tale of betrayal and revenge that grabbed me from page one and refused to let go.”

George knows quality when he sees it and I agree with his summation. Half a King is certainly fast-paced and it’s the revenge element that keeps the pages turning.
