Check-In Interview: Robin Hobb

Fool’s Assassin by Robin Hobb publishes August 12, 2014! This is a major release. Robin Hobb captured the attention of the fantasy genre with her first Farseer book, Assassin’s Apprentice, in 1995. The story of FitzChivalry has been one of the quintessential reads for all readers of the fantastic and Robin spent two trilogies exploring this wonderful character, one beloved by readers everywhere.

Now, after more than a decade, Robin returns to the story of Fitz and the Fool. In Fool’s Assassin, we continue the story.

So let’s check-in with Fitz’s creator and see what she’s up to!

Shawn Speakman: A few months ago, you announced that FitzChivalry would be returning, to excited eagerness by fantasy readers everywhere. FOOL’S ASSASSIN is scheduled to publish August 12, 2014. Where are you at in the process of its publication? Still editing? Copyediting? Proofing? Finished?

Robin Hobb: Yes to all. Some readers have received ARC’s with our dazzling new cover on it. That copy is, of course, riddled with minor errors created by me. But those have been ruthlessly hunted down and eliminated. So we are good to go with the new book. It will appear in August, to coincide with LonCon3 (Which I will be attending!)

Shawn Speakman: Will you and Del Rey Books be releasing an early excerpt of the book? And what other goodies can we expect until the book is published? Convention appearances? Giveaways? Tour? Where should fans be watching to learn of these things?

Robin Hobb: I don’t think we have a decision on ‘early excerpt’ yet. I will be doing a lot of traveling (well, a lot of traveling for me!) this year.
First up will possibly be SupaNova in Australia in June. That would be Sydney and Perth. Then San Diego International Comic Con in July. In August I will do a book tour of England starting before and ending after Loncon3. In October, I hope to be at New York Comic Con. In November, I’m a guest of honor at Contario in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. And that same month, I may go back to Australia for the SupaNovas in Adelaide and Brisbane. (I will definitely be in Australia this year. We have not fully decided if it’s June, November or both. As always, details will be up on the website at as soon as they are finalized.

Shawn Speakman: How does work go on Book 2? Got a title for it that you can share?

Robin Hobb: Book 2 is moving along nicely. Working title is The Fool’s Quest. Not set in stone, but I rather like it.

I can already hear the squeeing from all of you! Fool’s Assassin is coming August 12th! But it’s always nice to know that the author is already hard at work on the sequel and to get a title—Fool’s Quest! It’s going to be a great summer for reading and—for me, at least—Fool’s Assassin is one of the strongest reasons!
