Terry Brooks Reviews: Railsea by China Mieville

mieville-railsea-tradeBestselling author Terry Brooks has an eye for talent.

Of course I would say that. He hired me, didn’t he? Ha! Maybe that just means his opinions are circumspect when it comes to people. But when it comes to books and writing, he is usually unflappable in his ability to spot great books and writing talent. He has forced me to read The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, The Briar King by Greg Keyes, The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik, Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence, and any number of other great tales, long before they became bestsellers.

The newest book he wants me to read? Railsea by China Mieville.

From Terry Brooks, concerning Railsea:

“This month’s book recommendation: RAILSEA by China Mieville. Here is a truly original writer, someone who takes sentences and reinvents them. I love how he says things. You have to focus because if you don’t pay attention you will miss what he is getting at. But this mostly YA book is a retelling of MOBY DICK, and it is a resounding success. I just loved it. I’ve been a China fan since reading KRAKEN and CITY AND THE CITY among others. He can be a tough read, but no one ever said that good books were for sissies.”

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
