We’ve barely had a chance to catch our breath since yesterday’s announcement that a series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher was coming to Netflix. Now, the streaming video on demand service is back with another bombshell: a “Dark Crystal” series is planned to begin shooting this fall.
“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” is envisioned as a prequel to the original 1982 film. Directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, “The Dark Crystal” featured groundbreaking animatics and intricately detailed puppet characters designed by concept artist Brian Froud, who is returning for the new series. “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” will be produced by the Jim Henson Company, and scripted by Will Matthews and Javier Grillo-Marxuach.
The film won’t be the first work to explore the world before the events of the film. Fantasy author J. M. Lee’s spin-off novel Shadows of the Dark Crystal (originally released in 2016 but due out in paperback this Tuesday) was also set in the past. What relation, if any, exists between Lee’s novel and the Netflix series is unknown at this time.
