Multiple sources are reporting today that digital video on demand service Netflix is adding another title to its already stacked line-up of fandom-friendly original programming: a scripted drama based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s popular fantasy series, The Witcher.
The Witcher series — eight novels and counting — is set in a dark fantasy world in which supernaturally gifted warriors ply their unique trade as monster hunters for hire. The series protagonist, Geralt of Rivia, is one of these hunters, known as “witchers”. The novels, which have been translated into multiple languages, have spawned comic books, memorabilia, and other merchandise, least among it CD Projekt Red’s 2015 smash hit video game The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.
Sapkowski will serve as creative consultant on the series, which will be co-produced by Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, producers of SyFy’s “The Expanse”, and Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko of Platige Image, a Polish production company.
“The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world,” said Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, in an announcement from Netflix. “The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”
So, my question to you, Unbound World readers, is who should play Geralt? Let the casting begin!
