365 Days of Manga, Day 111: Go Go Heaven

GO GO HEAVEN ????????!!?• Keiko Yamada • CMX (2007-ongoing) • Akita Shoten (Princess, 1994-1999) • 13 volumes • Shôjo Fantasy Romantic Comedy • 13+ (mild language, mild violence, sexual situations)
When hapless Catholic school girl Shirayuki (“Snow White”) dies in a car accident, she is resurrected by the kiss of Prince, the pint-sized, devilish grandson of the King of Hell. “I’m not going to let anyone have you…not even those goofballs up in Heaven!” Prince vows, and soon he and his entourage of incompetent helpers have moved into Shirayuki’s house, bought off her school, and roped her into a bunch of increasingly over-the-top, slapstick adventures. There’s a trip to Heaven, a guest appearance by the Pope, a huge angels-vs.-demons battle, and a trip to outer space to the planet of the octopus women. In short, this manga is a grab-bag, an extreme version of a “hanging with the cool kids” story like Love Master A or My Heavenly Hockey Club. Some of the sequences are impressive in their sheer chutzpah and originality, but after awhile the randomness becomes tedious. Yamada’s art is scrawly and cluttered, pleasantly suggesting that the art, like the story, was a sort of improvisational exercise.
