LOVE CONTROL (Renai Sôsa, “Love Control”) ?????) • Ai Hasukawa • DMP (2008-2009) • Libre (2006-2007) • 2 volumes • Yaoi • 18+
Takashi Okumura, an alpha-male restaurant executive, hires handsome young interior designer Kei Yamashiro to remodel his apartment and put up with endless sexual harassment: “It’d be nice to let you ‘redesign’ my personal life as well,” he growls. Naturally, this causes Kei to fall for him, but not before lots and lots and lots of talking. Static even by yaoi standards, the manga consists almost entirely of sexually charged conversations and anguished internal monologues; even the sex scenes are cool and removed. Hasukawa’s art is equally chilly but polished and attractive, filled with dramatic shadows and screentone. Because the title story doesn’t include nearly enough plot to fill a volume, the book includes two backup stories as well. The whole package is pretty but unremarkable. (Review by Shaenon Garrity)
Today’s yaoi review is, again, courtesy of my good friend Shaenon Garrity, creator of the “Overlooked Manga Festival” and the upcoming Del Rey book “CLAMP in America.” She’s an amazing writer and reviewer and all her work, including her comics such as “Narbonic” and “Skin Horse,” are well worth checking out. Thanks, Shaenon!
What else is going on in the world of 365 Days of Manga? Today’s winner is Orr B. of Ohio, who will soon be getting five graphic novels (congratulations)! We also have a photo of one of our previous winners, Brandi S.!
I highly recommend that everyone check out Brandi’s awesome review of Baron Gong Battle, a gonzo manga sadly cut short in the prime of its translation. But Brandi, what did you think of Central City?
