METAMO KISS (Metamo Kiss) (??????) • Sora Omote • Tokyopop (2007) • Kadokawa Shoten (Asuka, 2003-2005) • 3 volumes • Shôjo Transgender Romantic Comedy • 13+ (mild language, mild sexual situations)
The people born into Kohanamaru’s family have the power to switch bodies with the person they’re destined to spend their lives with. Kohanamaru discovers this curse when he accidentally switches bodies with a cute-but-tough girl, Higashiyama…but it’s even more awkward than that, because Higashiyama has a crush on Kohanamaru’s brother! Metamo Kiss features distinctive artwork somewhere between shônen and shôjo manga, and the mood of the story is likewise a hybrid between shônen wackiness and shôjo sensitivity and angst. However, just as the art is better for single poses than for conveying action, so the story has an awkward, stuttery progression. Omote keeps making up new body-switching rules and ditching them when they prove inconvenient (a last-minute story about people who turn into plants is also out-of-the-blue), and too much of the storyline is wasted in a boring plot about “will their body-swapping secret be exposed?” Higashiyama is unlikeable and grouchy, and the ending feels unearned. Today’s winner is David S. of Colorado. Congrats, David! Today’s review was originally researched in 2006 by Mark Simmons, then I actually read the manga when it came out in English, making it a collaborative review.
