Emerald City Comic Con: An Interview

icon-emeraldcitycomicconThere are several great comic cons to attend throughout the year.

The Emerald City Comic Con is one of them!

Seattle’s comic con is set for this coming weekend, March 1 – March 3. It features many of the best attributes you see at the large conventions—and does several things better. There are a number of writers and artists I’m excited to meet and more than a few huge name actors who will be attending. It will make for a fun weekend, one I hope you will go to if you live in the Pacific Northwest!

In order to learn a bit more about the Emerald City Comic Con, I asked Convention Director Jim Demonakos a few questions.

Here are his answers:

Shawn Speakman: The Emerald City Comicon is coming to Seattle, WA on March 1-3. Tell Unbound Worlds a bit about the convention?

Jim Demonakos: ECCC is the largest comic book and pop culture convention in the Pacific Northwest. We bring the top names in comics, both writers and artists, almost every major publisher, tons of amazing exhibitors, a sprawling artist alley, three floors of gaming, a kids area featuring NASA, dozens of celebrities, over 180 hours of programming and so much more!

Shawn Speakman: Many have labeled Emerald City Comicon as the best comic con that focuses on comic books. What does Emerald City do right where maybe the San Diego / New York Comic Cons fail when it comes to comic books?

Jim Demonakos: I wouldn’t say that SDCC or NYCC fail, to me it’s just a focus issue – we start with comic books as the basis of what we do and build the convention from there, so doing that informs our decisions.

Shawn Speakman: You are the convention director. I assume you love comic books. What books are you reading right now? Who is doing extraordinary work in the field?

Jim Demonakos: Aside from being the Convention Director, I also own a chain of comic book stores, so I read comics every week. I’m a big fan of Rick Remender’s work, both his Marvel stuff and his indy creations like Fear Agent. I like when people with an independent sensibility tackle mainstream characters, like what Gerry Duggan & Brian Posehn are doing on Deadpool. I continue to read all of Kirkman’s work, especially Walking Dead and Invincible. I definitely enjoy a lot of books coming out from Image these days. Lots to read, never enough time!

Shawn Speakman: You have a number of celebrities coming to the convention. Do you have a favorite you are looking forward to meeting?

Jim Demonakos: I think Chris Sarandon, who played Prince Humperdink in the Princess Bride, but was also the voice of Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas!

Shawn Speakman: How can people attend the convention? Better yet, why should they?

Jim Demonakos: Right now, we’re almost sold out of Sunday tickets and already sold out of Saturday tickets, so by the time the show rolls around, we’ll probably just have some Friday tickets to sell. As to why, I’ll make it simple – if you’re a fan of pop culture, there is something here for you, we’re not “just” a comic book show or “just” a celebrity show, we have honestly have something for everyone if you’re a fan of what’s popular in pop culture now, from Avengers to Walking Dead, we’ve got it!
