Cage Match 2015: Women Warriors

I don’t know about you, but there’s a creeping malaise that tends to set in around this time every winter — the lack of sun leads to a vitamin D deficiency-induced lack of energy, the ritual of layering on sweaters and coats and scarves and hats has become excruciating, and the sheer effort of leaving the house in the morning wipes out a good three-quarters of your gumption for the day. (For those of you in the southern hemisphere, stop smirking: your time will come.)

So, really, what better time to get your nerd on? Escape the armpit of winter, wrap a blanket around those shoulders, and join us… for Cage Match 2015: Women Warriors!

This year, we’ve got a double whammy for you: all of our participating characters are female, and not a single one of them has ever been featured in a previous Cage Match. Given the current conversation surrounding gender in the sci-fi/fantasy realm, we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some of our favorite fictional kickass ladies, from well-known to niche. These characters run the gamut from lovers to fighters, masterminds to enforcers, heroes to villains, team players to lone wolves. Some are human, some are… very much not. Some fight with a blade, some with a firearm, some not at all.

And more than a few of them know their fair share about dragons.

So, without further ado, here it is: your bracket!

Our number one seed this year is Alice Quinn, the talented magician-turned-vengeful niffin of Lev Grossman’s The Magicians Trilogy (as you may remember, Grossman wrote last year’s final match!) Joining her in the ranks of the elite are Anne Rice’s Akasha, Patrick Rothfuss’ Felurian, Bellatrix Lestrange of the Harry Potter series, and Death from Neil Gaiman/DC Comics’ Sandman. But don’t write off the competitors from Earthsea, Outlander, Discworld, Panem, and so many more!

Place your bets now in the comments – Round 1 matches go live Monday morning, March 2nd!
