Having finished his critically acclaimed graphic novel Fight Club 2, Chuck Palahniuk is moving forward in his plans to conquer all print media. The latest format to cede to his unique brand of unsettling fiction? Coloring books. If you’ve been anywhere near a bookstore (or grocery store, or big box retailer, or…) then you know that comic books for grown-ups are red hot right now, and this is a perfect time for Chuck’s subversive prose to infect the market like a virus.
Dark Horse Books announced today that they’ll be publishing Bait: Stories for You to Color, Palahniuk’s first coloring book for adults–with an emphasis on the adult part. This isn’t just a coloring book, though: It’s a full-fledged short story collection. It will include eight bizarre stories accompanied by almost 50 pieces of original, colorable art from Lee Bermejo, Duncan Fegredo, Kirbi Fagan, Alise Gluskova, Joëlle Jones, Steve Morris, Tony Puryear and Marc Scheff.
Among these disturbing tales:
- A passenger on the Titanic who finds a surgical solution to the obstacle of “women and children first”
- A Hollywood star, whose fading brand faces a viral (and scatological) internet campaign
- An animal psychic who coaxes a statement from a fish that witnessed a political assassination
- Increasingly terrible birthday gifts that place a girl at the center of an extinction-level event
Palahniuk, a man who has been known to promoting audience participation in his readings and signings by handing out oddball props like inflatable bananas (Trust me: I’ve seen him do it.), looks forward to what is a new and unprecedented opportunity for collaboration between his readers and himself:
“Maybe between your colors, the artists’ designs, and my stories we can create something that endures,” wrote Palahniuk. “Something worth keeping. Let’s create a well-bound book that can sit on any shelf and be available for a new generation to discover and enjoy.”
